The Chinese furniture cabinet is the first product to be recalled in the US because it does not meet STURDY standards

2024 05/08

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently recalled the Mill Valley Junior six-drawer cabinet imported from China LFN Co., LTD., which is about 57½ inches long, 18 inches wide, 35 inches high and weighs about 132 pounds, and is the first product to be recalled in the United States because it does not meet STURDY standards.

Back in December 2022 STURDY (short for Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth) Bill was signed into law. The CPSC evaluated the validity of ASTM F2057-23 as required by law and determined that the standard meets STURDY requirements.

On April 19, 2023, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission voted to adopt ASTM F2057-23 as a mandatory safety standard to prevent injuries and deaths in young children when furniture such as dressers and other clothing storage units tip over.

ASTM F2057-23 applies to freestanding clothing storage units 27 inches or higher, such as bins and closets. The standard requires the locker to withstand a 60-pound weight for 30 seconds in the area most likely to tip over without tipping over.

The stability test of cabinet products in China is referred to "GB/T 10357.4-2023 furniture mechanical properties test Part 4: Cabinet stability".

In fact, even if the stability test of the cabinet products is qualified, it can not guarantee that the cabinet products are not good dumping, the best way, the children's cabinet is higher than 600mm, and the adult cabinet is higher than 750mm, and the anti-dumping device should be added and fixed on the wall.

Previously, there were news reports that IKEA recalled the "deadly Chest of drawers" in North America, but it will not recall the same product in China. Why not recall killer chests of drawers in China? Ikea says it meets China's cabinet stability standards.

The CPSC notice is due to the fact that the container, which is imported by LFN LTD and manufactured in Vietnam, poses a risk of instability if not properly secured to the wall, which can lead to serious tipping and clamping hazards that threaten the safety of children and may even result in injury or death to children. Although no injuries or fatalities have been reported as a result of the recall, CPSC still considers this a serious safety concern.
